Extended Summary
BATON ROUGE, La. (Interstat) ā A dominant first-half offensive explosion propelled the Southern Jaguars to a decisive 87-73 victory over the rival Grambling Tigers in a Southwestern Athletic Conference menās basketball game Saturday night at a packed Clark Activity Center. A crowd of 6,958 saw the Jaguars, led by a game-high 22 points from AJ Barnes, seize control early and withstand a second-half push from the Tigers to complete a regular-season series sweep. Southern improved to 13-14 overall, while Grambling fell to 11-15. The most critical phase of the contest was the opening 20 minutes, where Southern built an insurmountable lead. The Jaguars shot a blistering 58.1% from the field in the first half, connecting on 6 of 10 attempts from three-point range. Their offensive efficiency was staggering, scoring 48 points by halftime. Barnes was the catalyst, scoring 15 of his points before the break, including a trio of three-pointers. His third triple, assisted by Cam Amboree with 15 seconds left, gave Southern its largest lead of the half at 48-24. Grambling, conversely, struggled mightily to generate offense early. The Tigers shot just 32% in the first half and committed nine turnovers, which Southern converted into 10 fast-break points. The Jaguarsā defensive activity, registering eight first-half steals, fueled their transition game and created easy scoring opportunities that Grambling could not match. The second half saw a significant shift in momentum as Grambling emerged with renewed energy. The Tigers nearly doubled their first-half output, scoring 49 points after intermission by attacking the paint and drawing fouls. Antonio Munoz led the charge for Grambling, scoring 17 of his team-high 19 points in the second half. Jamil Muttilib added 13 of his 17 points after halftime as the Tigers methodically chipped away at the deficit. Gramblingās defensive pressure also intensified, forcing Southern into a more pedestrian 39-point second half on 39.1% shooting. The Tigers cut the lead to 11 points on multiple occasions, the last coming at 76-65 on a Derrius Ward three-pointer with 5:34 remaining. Each time, however, Southern had an answer. A key sequence came when Michael Jacobs found DaMariee Jones for a layup and a foul, completing a three-point play to push the lead back to 81-69 with 3:24 left, effectively halting Gramblingās final sustained rally. While the Tigers won the second-half battle, the 24-point halftime canyon proved too deep to escape. Southernās balanced attack and early dominance secured the win. Barnesās 22 points came on efficient 8-of-12 shooting, including 4 of 6 from deep. Jones provided 15 points, Terrance Dixon added 12 points and three blocks, and Jacobs orchestrated the offense with eight assists to go with 11 points. Beyond Barnes, Southernās supporting cast made critical contributions. Jacobsās playmaking was pivotal, Amboree dished out five assists, and Dixonās interior defense with three blocks altered numerous Grambling attempts. The Jaguars shared the ball effectively, finishing with 12 assists on 30 made field goals, and were nearly flawless at the free-throw line, making 19 of 23 attempts. For Grambling, Munozās 19 points and four assists paced the effort, with Muttilib contributing 17 points, three assists and a block. Jimel Lane added 11 points. The Tigers dominated the offensive glass, grabbing 11 rebounds to Southernās three, which led to a 40-38 advantage in points in the paint. Yet, they could not overcome poor three-point shooting (4 of 16) and a significant disparity in fast-break points, where Southern held a 17-10 edge. Statistically, the game was defined by efficiency. Southern scored 87 points on 74 possessions for an offensive rating of 117.7, a mark that underscored their effective shot-making and low turnover count. Grambling managed 73 points on 73 possessions for a 99.5 offensive rating, hampered by their cold start. The victory gives Southern momentum as they head into the final stretch of SWAC play, while Grambling must regroup quickly before its next conference matchup. According to National Statisticalās ELO system, Southern entered the game with an 80.7% probability to win, a forecast validated by their wire-to-wire performance fueled by a devastating first-half display.

Preview: Grambling Tigers at Southern Jaguars BATON ROUGE, La. (Interstat) ā The latest chapter in one of the Southwestern Athletic Conferenceās most intense rivalries will be written Saturday when the Southern Jaguars host the Grambling Tigers at the Clark Activity Center. Both teams enter the matchup seeking momentum as the regular season winds down. Southern (12-14 overall) holds a slight edge in the standings over Grambling (11-14). The Jaguars won the first meeting this season decisively, 71-53, in Grambling on Jan. 17. Grambling arrives having lost four of its last five, including a 63-68 road loss at Prairie View on Monday. The Tigers will lean on guard Jamil Muttilib, who has been a prolific scorer recently. He poured in 25 points in 38 minutes against Prairie View and 26 points at Texas Southern on Feb. 14. However, his production has been inconsistent, scoring just two points in two of his last six outings. Southern has been more successful lately, winning three of its last five, but is coming off a narrow 73-74 loss at Texas Southern on Monday. Guard AJ Barnes has been a key contributor for the Jaguars during this stretch, scoring 16 points in that loss and 17 points in a win over Alabama A&M on Feb. 7. His playmaking and defense, evidenced by a 4-block performance at Jackson State, will be critical. The game features two teams with nearly identical records but contrasting recent forms. Grambling will aim to avenge its earlier loss and solve its offensive inconsistencies beyond Muttilib. Southern looks to protect its home court and complete a regular-season sweep, using its balanced attack to counter Gramblingās top scorer. Tipoff is set for Saturday, Feb. 21, in Baton Rouge. The game is part of the SWAC conference schedule.
