Preview: Fairfield Stags at Quinnipiac Bobcats HAMDEN, Conn. (Interstat) — A pivotal Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference men’s basketball rematch is set for Sunday when the Quinnipiac Bobcats host the Fairfield Stags at TD Bank Sports Center. The Bobcats (18-10, 8-5 MAAC), who sit a game ahead in the conference standings, will look to complete a regular-season sweep after defeating the Stags 72-65 in Fairfield on Feb. 1. Quinnipiac, however, enters off a surprising 56-49 home loss to Merrimack last Sunday, a game in which they shot just 29.8% from the field. Fairfield (16-11, 7-6) aims to avenge that earlier defeat and solidify its conference tournament positioning. The Stags are also looking to rebound from a loss, falling 83-74 at Saint Peter’s on Feb. 15. The matchup features two of the league’s top performers. Fairfield’s Declan Wucherpfennig is coming off a 23-point, 8-rebound effort against Saint Peter’s and recorded a double-double (14 points, 12 rebounds) in the first meeting with Quinnipiac. He has scored in double figures in five of his last six games. For Quinnipiac, forward Amarri Monroe was dominant in the first matchup, posting 23 points and 13 rebounds. He is averaging a double-double over his last five contests, including a 15-rebound performance against Merrimack. Beyond the star power, the game hinges on consistency. Quinnipiac’s defense, which ranks near the top of the MAAC, will be tested by a Fairfield team that scored 92 points in a win at Sacred Heart earlier this month. The Stags must improve their ball security after committing 15 turnovers in the February loss to the Bobcats. With both teams jockeying for seeding in the tightly packed MAAC standings, Sunday’s contest carries significant weight for the final weeks of the regular season. Tipoff is scheduled for 2 p.m. EST.
