HARTFORD, Conn. (Interstat) — The undefeated and top-ranked Connecticut Huskies put their perfect season on the line Sunday when they host the Providence Friars in a Big East women’s basketball matchup at XL Center. UConn (28-0, 15-0 Big East) has dominated its schedule, winning every game by double digits and averaging a margin of victory of 42.3 points in conference play. The Huskies, who clinched the regular-season conference title last week, are led by national player of the year candidate Sarah Strong. The sophomore forward is averaging 19.4 points, 6.1 rebounds and 3.8 assists, and she scored 21 points with four assists and three blocks in Wednesday’s 83-69 road win over Villanova. Providence (14-14, 8-7) enters on a four-game winning streak, its longest of the season, following a 66-60 victory over DePaul on Wednesday. The Friars are led by guard Orlagh Gormley, who scored 18 points in that win and is averaging 11.2 points and 3.2 assists per game. Teneisia Brown (14 points) and Sabou Gueye (15 points) provided key support against DePaul. The Huskies have owned this series, including a 90-53 victory in Providence on Dec. 31. In that game, UConn forced 24 turnovers and held the Friars to 30.9% shooting. For Providence to challenge the nation’s top team, it must limit turnovers, control the tempo and find consistent scoring beyond Gormley. UConn’s relentless defense, which allows just 49.9 points per game, will test that plan. The Huskies also boast a balanced attack; in the win over Villanova, Azzi Fudd scored 25 points and Ashlynn Shade added 13 points and five assists. The game is scheduled for a 1 p.m. EST tip-off. Following this contest, UConn will host Georgetown on Thursday, while Providence will travel to face Creighton.
