LOUISVILLE, Ky. (Interstat) — A surging Louisville squad looks to continue its push for Atlantic Coast Conference supremacy when it hosts a Virginia team seeking a rĆ©sumĆ©-building road win Sunday at KFC Yum! Center. The No. 6-ranked Cardinals (24-4, 11-3 ACC) have won seven of their last eight, including a dominant 88-65 victory over Florida State last Sunday. Louisville’s balanced attack is led by guard Laura Ziegler, who is averaging 15.2 points and 4.8 assists per game in conference play. She posted 14 points and seven assists against the Seminoles. The Cavaliers (18-8, 8-6) arrive with momentum after a significant 75-69 road win at Stanford last Sunday. Their fortunes hinge on dynamic guard Kymora Johnson, who scored 25 points in that victory. Johnson is averaging 22.1 points over her last seven games, including a 26-point, eight-assist effort in a triple-overtime win at Wake Forest on Jan. 29. Virginia has shown it can compete with top teams, taking then-NC State to overtime in a narrow loss last month. However, consistency has been an issue, with recent road losses at California and Virginia Tech. Louisville, whose only conference losses are by one point to Duke and to NC State in overtime, boasts one of the nation’s most efficient offenses. The Cardinals have won the last five meetings in the series, including a 73-64 victory in Charlottesville on Jan. 4. A win would solidify Louisville’s hold on second place in the ACC. For Virginia, an upset on the road would provide a crucial Quadrant 1 victory for its NCAA tournament seeding hopes. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m. EST Sunday. Louisville travels to Georgia Tech next Thursday, while Virginia hosts North Carolina.
