LANDOVER, Md. (Interstat) — A holiday NFC East rivalry with postseason implications for only one side will unfold on Christmas Day when the Dallas Cowboys visit the Washington Commanders at FedEx Field. The Cowboys (6-8-1), eliminated from playoff contention, enter Thursday’s game seeking to end a three-game skid. Their most recent loss was a 34-17 defeat to the Los Angeles Chargers. Quarterback Dak Prescott has been a bright spot amid the losses, throwing for 320 yards and two touchdowns in a win over Kansas City on Nov. 27 and for 376 yards and a touchdown in a shootout loss to Detroit on Dec. 4. In the October meeting with Washington, a 44-22 Dallas victory, Prescott orchestrated a dominant offensive performance. Washington (4-11), also out of the playoff picture, looks to rebound from a 29-18 loss to Philadelphia last Saturday. Veteran quarterback Marcus Mariota has shown flashes of dual-threat ability, rushing for 55 yards and two touchdowns while passing for 294 yards in a narrow overtime loss to Denver on Nov. 30, and accounting for 254 total yards in a win over the New York Giants on Dec. 14. Despite both teams’ losing records, the divisional matchup carries traditional weight. The Commanders will be without several key defensive starters due to injury, potentially offering Prescott opportunities downfield. Washington’s offense, inconsistent all season, will face a Cowboys defense that has struggled recently, allowing an average of 37 points during its losing streak. According to National Statistical’s game simulator, Washington is projected to win 28-24. Oddsmakers have installed the Commanders as 7-point favorites, with an over/under of 50.5 points. This game concludes the regular season for both teams. Dallas will visit the New York Giants on Jan. 3, while Washington travels to face the Philadelphia Eagles the same day.
